Round 2 Recap: 51st Pacific Coast Amateur
PACIFIC COAST GOLF ASSOCIATION (University Place, Wash) – Round two of the 51st Pacific Coast Amateur Championship allowed for a world-class leaderboard to get even more star-studded, with very little separation between first place and those able to strike for the lead with 36 holes remaining.
It didn’t take long for someone to take advantage of Ieremia’s miscues and that came from early favorite, Cameron Champ of Sacramento, California. Champ, the Texas A&M standout, fired a sensational six-under-par 65 en route to a three-stroke lead heading into round three at -8. Champ had six birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-5 fourth.
Also shot gunning up the leaderboard was Cranbourne, Australia’s David Micheluzzi. Playing in his second Pacific Coast Amateur, Micheluzzi closed his round with an eagle on 18 after stuffing an approach shot to within six feet. The Golf Australia player sits tied at -5 with Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Others carding impressive rounds today were Olive Branch, Mississippi’s Braden Thornberry (67), Lake Mary, Florida’s Carl Yuan (67), San Jose, California’s Justin Suh (67) and Hayden Springer of Trophy Lake, Texas (67). Defending champion Will Zalatoris of Plano, Texas is tied for 8 th at -3, only five strokes back of Champ.
Due to consistent and relentless resolve from Southern California Golf Association, the Morse Cup with get to stay in Studio City. Sahith Theegala, Stewart Hagestad and Norman Xiong, all members of the Southern California Golf Association, held off a strong surge by the field to win it’s consecutive Morse Cup and the bragging rights associated to the win. Coming runner up were their in-state rivals, the Northern California Golf Association.
Round three begins tomorrow at 7:30am with entrance for spectators continuing to be free of charge.
