ELLIOTT WAINWRIGHT LEADS PACIFIC COAST AMATEUR BY ONE SHOT AFTER FIRST ROUND

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C., August 5 – Elliott Wainwright of Hillsborough, CA, fired a 4-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead over J.C. Deacon of Unionville, Ontario after the first round of the 37th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Capilano Golf & Country Club.

Under sun-splashed skies overlooking the Vancouver harbor, the 18-year-old Wainwright -- a left-hander who was a semifinalist in the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur -- had a bogey-free round with birdies on the par-4 first and par-3 fourth hole and an eagle 2 on the 368-yard 12th hole, which came when he holed his140-yard 8-iron approach shot from the fairway.

Deacon, 21, a student at UNLV, had four birdies and just one bogey on his round en route to his 67 today.

Wainwright was one of three players to make eagle 2 on par-4 holes today. James Strickland of Scottsdale, AZ, eagled the 472-yard first hole with a 5-ironfrom the right rough and James Lepp of Abbotsford, B.C., eagled the 439-yard17th hole when he sank a gap-wedge shot from 125 yards.

The 19-year-old Lepp’s eagle fueled a back nine of 31 on the Stanley Thompson-designed layout.  Lepp, who won the Canadian Tour’s Greater Vancouver Classic on Sunday, heads a group of eight golfers who are two shots back of Wainwright at 68, including Dan Swanson of Surrey BC.

Two golfers hoping to play their way onto the U.S. Walker Cup team are in that large group, including Pac-10 champion John Merrick of Long Beach and J.J. Jakovac of Napa, CA, runner-up in last week’s Western Amateur.  Chris Botsford of Pasadena, CA, who best Jakovac last week, finished at even-par 70 today.

Defending champion Brock Mackenzie of Yakima, WA, is in another large group who finished at 1-under-par 69.

Lepp’s and Swanson’s scores gave the British Columbia Golf Association a one-shot lead in the annual Morse Cup Team Competition.  With the best two scores of three counting in each of the first two rounds, BCGA has a one-shot lead over the Pacific Northwest Golf Association team.  Defending champion Northern California GA is in third, another shot back.

The 72-hole tournament concludes Friday.  The Morse Cup competition concludes tomorrow.
