Under sun-splashed skies overlooking
the
Deacon, 21, a student at UNLV, had
four birdies and just one bogey on his round en route to his 67 today.
Wainwright was one of three players
to make eagle 2 on par-4 holes today. James Strickland of Scottsdale, AZ,
eagled the 472-yard first hole with a 5-ironfrom the right rough and James Lepp of Abbotsford, B.C., eagled the 439-yard17th hole when
he sank a gap-wedge shot from 125 yards.
The 19-year-old Lepp’s
eagle fueled a back nine of 31 on the Stanley Thompson-designed layout. Lepp, who won the
Canadian Tour’s Greater Vancouver Classic on Sunday, heads a group of eight
golfers who are two shots back of Wainwright at 68, including Dan Swanson of

onto the U.S. Walker Cup team are in that large group, including Pac-10
champion John Merrick of
Defending champion Brock Mackenzie
of Yakima, WA, is in another large group who finished at 1-under-par 69.
Lepp’s and Swanson’s scores gave the
British Columbia Golf Association a one-shot lead in the annual Morse Cup Team
Competition. With the best two scores of
three counting in each of the first two rounds, BCGA has a one-shot lead over
the Pacific Northwest Golf Association team.
Defending champion Northern California GA is in third, another shot
back.
The 72-hole tournament concludes
Friday. The Morse Cup competition
concludes tomorrow.
