BROCK MACKENZIE OF YAKIMA , WA, WINS 2002 PACIFIC COAST AMATEUR BY ONE SHOT

2002 Champion Brock Mackenzie
2002 champion Brock Mackenzie
Brock Mackenzie of Yakima, WA, held off Dan Swanson of Surrey, British Columbia, by one shot to win the 36th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, CA.

Aided by a 2-under-par 70 from Jeff Wilson of Suisun, the Northern California Golf Association held off British Columbia and the Metropolitan (NY) GA by two shots to win the Morse Cup Team Competition.  With the best two of three individual scores counting each day for the team total, the NCGA totaled 590 for four rounds to win the cup for the second time in three years.

The 21-year-old Mackenzie, a second-team All-American as a sophomore at the University of Washington and the 2001 Washington State Amateur champion, became the second Washington state resident in a row to win the Pacific Coast Amateur (Corey Prugh of Spokane won in 2001).

Mackenzie was remarkably consistent throughout the tournament, posting rounds of 70-71-70-72 -- 283, which was 5 under par over the 6,890-yard, par-72 layout.

Swanson tried to mount a charge but came up a shot short after a final-round of 71 and a 284 total. Brian Hughes of Portland, OR, and Keith Decker of Martinsville, VA, finished another shot back.

"I never was in any real trouble all day," said Mackenzie after his round.  "I just played solid golf again; in fact, it's amazing how similar my rounds were all week."

Mackenzie had three birdies and three bogies on his round but thought he blown the tournament when he bogied the 428-yard, par-5 finishing hole.  "I drove it in the left rough on a downslope," he said later but before the rest of the field was in. "I had no chance to get to the green.  If I lose the tournament because of that hole, it will leave a very sour taste in my mouth."

Swanson almost made that prediction come true, but he bogied the 400-yard, par-four 15th hole and then left an eight-foot eagle putt short on the par-five 16th.  When Swanson missed another eight-footer for birdie on the closing hole, Mackenzie had dodged a bullet.

"I had my chances," Swanson, a senior at the University of Texas-El Paso, "but just couldn't make enough putts.  I thought I finally had the speed of the greens down and then left that eagle putt short."

Decker, too, had his chances but he could manage only pars on the par-5 holes and then three-putted No. 17.  "Overall, I'm pleased with the way I played.  I'm glad this old guy was able to hang in there," said the 42-year-old Decker.  "I'm old enough to the father to half of this field."

Matt Bettencourt of Modesto, CA, who was in second place, two shots behind Mackenzie to begin play today, made a triple-bogey 8 on the second hole and never recovered, shooting a final-round 76.  Prugh, the defending champion, never threatened, finishing at 311 for 72 holes.
